Got talent and a dream?
More than 25 local baseball players stepped up to the plate Tuesday for a Major League tryout with the New York Mets.
Mets' scout Bob Rossie held the open tryout at Scaggs Field on the campus of Meridian Community College, looking for players who might have been overlooked in the recent draft.
The players were timed in 30 and 60 yard sprints, given an opportunity to take batting practice, and the pitchers were clocked.
Another local talent on hand was former MCC stand-out, Reggie Scott. Although Scott hasn't seen much competitive action lately, Rossie seems to think that there is still a chance for him in the minor or independent leagues.
Rossie told Scott after the try-out that he needed to stay in shape and continue to work on his game. He also expressed to him that he could be called into free agency at any time, so not to lose hope.
West Lauderdale junior, Van Wilson, also received extra attention from Rossie afterwards. "Van's going to be playing in a few of our scout games." Rossie said. "He's got a lot of talent and should have a great senior year next season with the Knights."
The Mets scout stressed to all who attended how important it was to stay involved in game competition. "Especially the ones who are out of school," Rossie said. "A lot of the guys who are still in school will be competing in summer leagues this summer. But it's important for players like Reggie to find a league to play in as well."
