Charlean Givens, an employee of Newton County Farm Service Agency for more than 27 years, was recently presented a Certificate of Merit and a monetary bonus by her county executive director, Betty S. Tingle, for "Performance Beyond the Call of Duty."
Tingle said Givens' performance is exceptional she is willing to go the extra mile, adding that she takes extra time with the farmers to make sure they understand all information pertaining to various programs administrated by the agency.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Maresha K. Lewis has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the U.S. Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations.
She is the daughter of Richard and Myra Lewis and granddaughter of Lillie Jenkins, all of Meridian. Lewis is a 2000 graduate of Meridian High School.

U.S. Navy Petty officer 2nd Class Marcus D. Campbell recently celebrated the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk's 40th anniversary while forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan.
Sailors from Campbell's ship recently visited Guam during a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean. Campbell is a 1989 graduate of Meridian High School and joined the Navy in March 1992. He is the son of Edwina G. Norman of Meridian.
Navy Seaman Reonada A. Hardy recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
While on deployment, Hardy will participate in joint-service, multi-national operations and have the opportunity to visit foreign ports. He is a 1998 graduate of Newton High School.
Navy Fireman Tony L. Shaw recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Prior to deploying, his group participated in a 17-day Atlantic Joint Task Force Exercise designed to prepare Naval forces for contingencies that they may encounter during the deployment.
He is the son of Carolyn D. and Mikel S. Powe of Waynesboro, and a 1996 graduate of Wayne County High School. He joined the Navy in May 2000.
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Lucas L. Crowell, a 1998 graduate of Choctaw County High School in Butler, Ala., recently was promoted to his current rank while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
