This year's July 4 celebration at Bonita Lakes will include a $10,000 fireworks show and a flyover by pilots from Naval Air Station Meridian.
The Meridian City Council discussed the event at a regular meeting Tuesday night.
Meridian's July 4 event has been ranked in the top 20 in the region by the Southeast Tourism Society.
The event is anchored by the Meridian Symphony Orchestra's Fourth of July Pops concert. More than 10,000 people attended last year.
This year, the event is being sponsored by Cellular South, which will split the cost of fireworks with the city. Food vendors open at 5 p.m., with the concert beginning at 8 p.m. and the fireworks at 9 p.m.
City purchase:
On Tuesday night, the Meridian City Council also approved the purchase of an $89,000 "flush" truck to be used by employees of the Public Works Department to unclog city sewage lines. During storms, city lines can become clogged, causing sewage to back up into some residents' lines.
