HATIESBURG (AP) Cissye Gallagher won her ninth MWGA State Amateur championship by defeating defending champ Pam Posey 6 and 5 Thursday at Canebrake Golf Club.
Gallagher, of Greenwood, had birdies on four consecutive holes at one point and was 5-under-par 31 on the front nine.
I did play well,'' she said. No, I probably can't play any better than I did today.''
Boy, she was hot,'' said Posey of Meridian.
Posey dethroned Gallagher in last year's finals at Natchez, ending a run of three consecutive championships for Gallagher.
Posey hurt herself right from the start, when she three-putted at the 305-yard, par-4 No. 1 for a bogey.
Gallagher, on the other hand, chipped out of a bunker to within 12 feet on her third shot, then sank the par putt to grab a lead she would never relinquish.
Gallagher was consistently 30-40 yards longer than Posey off the tee and on target with her short game.
She had easy birdies at Nos. 5 and 6, then with rain starting to fall, hit the shot of the week.
Teeing off at the 133-yard, par-3 seventh hole, Gallagher used a 7-iron, shot straight at the pin and bounced it to within a foot of the hole.
When Posey missed an 18-foot birdie putt, Gallagher had a four-hole lead.
