County school board adopts $41.8 million budget

Anticipating a new round of cuts in state education funding, the Lauderdale County School Board Thursday adopted a $41.8 million budget, which includes a 1.7 mill ad valorem tax increase.
The specific amount of reductions in state funding has yet to be determined, according to Superintendent David Little.
On Thursday, the county school board also:
n Reclassified 30 acres of 16th Section land at West Lauderdale School from forestry to recreational and approved leasing it to the West Lauderdale Softball Association, which plans to build a softball/baseball complex of eight fields on the site.
n Approved of "Choosing The Best" course to be taught in Career Discovery class for seventh-graders. The course promotes sexual abstinence and will be taught by school nurses.
