A great long distance rate isn't the only thing you can get with a dollar.
For the same price, you can cast one ballot in Meridian Museum of Art's 10th Annual People's Choice Art Competition. Voting continues for the popular local event that gives museum visitors the chance to chose the winners.
More than 180 works by 102 artists are featured in this year's exhibit, which kicked off earlier this month. Headed up by last year's Best of Show winner Joey Horn of Terry, the show features artists from the local area (such as Becky Glover, Peyton Long and Daniel Saucier), from across Mississippi and Alabama (such as Collin Asmus, Elisabeth Extine and Zdenko Kritic) and from as far away as Michigan (Joe Hoersten) and Florida (Deborah Thompson). Artists include young and old, newcomers and the long-experienced.
A variety of works are featured in the competition, including but not limited to raku pottery, oil paintings, calligraphic prints, watercolors, assemblages, bronze sculpture, stained glass, hand-tinted photographs, pastels, quilts, mixed media pieces and religious icons done in egg tempera.
And the competition's judges are museum visitors.
For $1, each person may cast one ballot. Visitors not only can vote for the Best in Show winner, but also in each of the media categories, including acrylics, drawings/prints, mixed media, oils, photographs, three-dimensional works and watercolors.
Voting for the annual competition will conclude at 5 p.m. on July 20. Award winners will be announced at a reception on July 21.
Meridian Museum of Art is located at 628 25th Ave. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.; admission is free. For more information, call 693-1501.
