DECATUR Three Newton County Elementary teachers and four Newton County High School teachers retired at the end of this school year. The elementary teachers are Wanda Strebeck, Betty Nicholson and Barbara Blalock. The high school teachers are Judy Leach, Alton Leach, Betty White and Carolyn Clark.
Carrie Daigrepont of Quitman is the recipient of the 2001-2002 Lee Anne Smith Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
The $1,200 scholarship is provided annually by an endowment established by the late Shirley Smith of Meridian as a memorial to her daughter. Daigrepont is studying in the physical therapist assistant program.
Erin Hart of Sturgis, formerly of Osage City, Kan., will serve as the Joseph O. Carson Scholar at Meridian Community College.
The MCC Foundation provides the annual $600 scholarship.
Hart is studying in the dental hygiene program.
Meridian Community College sophomore, Jeremy Gray of Lauderdale, has received the $600 J.P. Gant Scholarship, which is funded annually by the MCC Foundation through an endowment established by the family and friends of the late Mr. Gant.
Gray is a graduate of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science.
MOBILE, Ala. Gregory L. Joiner of Collinsville has been named to the University of Mobile Dean's List for the 2001 spring semester. Dean's List students at the university must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 hours.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. Julie Elise Entrekin has been named to the second semester Dean's List at Rhodes College.
Dean's List students at Rhodes must be enrolled in 13 or more credit hours and have a grade point average of at least 3.70. Entrekin is a graduate of Meridian High School and is a member of the 2001 class at Rhodes. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Entrekin Jr.
LAWTON, Okla. Army National Guard Pvt. Heather M. Dearman has graduated from basic combat military training at Fort Sill.
A 1994 graduate of Meridian Community College, she is the daughter of William T. Wright Sr. of Meridian.
ASHLAND, Wis. Sarah E. Johnson, a senior at Northland College, has been named to the Dean's List for the 2001 winter/spring term. Dean's List students at Northland must have a grade point average of at least 3.5.
Johnson is a 1998 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. She is the daughter of Robin and Joe Johnson of Meridian.
SCOOBA Mike Atwood of Meridian is one of eight students in East Mississippi Community College's funeral service technology program who received a merit award for this school year.Atwood will be a sophomore in the fall. He is currently employed with Milling Funeral Home in Union.
ANDERSON, Ind. Evonne J. Wheatley of Meridian has been named to the Dean's List at Anderson University. Dean's List students at Anderson must have a grade point average of at least 3.5.
