Newly re-elected Meridian officials took the opportunity at inauguration ceremonies Monday to request unity in order to achieve common goals.
The five city councilmen and Mayor John Robert Smith all pleaded for a more "can-do" attitude from residents.
Before the backdrop of a gigantic U.S. flag, the councilmen and Smith took their oaths of office and made brief remarks to a crowd of several hundred gathered around a large stage erected for the ceremonies. The oaths were administered by Jimmie Smith, president of the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors.
Mayor Smith told the crowd Meridian has experienced a rebirth in recent years, overcoming historically negative attitudes by moving forward with significant achievements such as the Riley Performing Arts and Educational Conference Center.
According to Mayor Smith, big pieces of the city's master puzzle are in place and by working together, citizens can realize their dream of making the city a better place for their families. Smith cautioned the crowd, saying the journey would not be an easy one.
