Former Forest standout signs with ECCC
Former Forest High School standout athlete Mario Thomas has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at East Central Community College.
Thomas, 5-8, 165-pound pitcher/shortstop, posted a 4-1 mark on the mound and a 2.16 ERA for the 2001 Bearcats, who advanced to the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs before ending the season with an 18-9 record.
Thomas was also effective at the plate, posting a .348 batting average.
In recognition of his success, Thomas was named to the All-State, All-District and All-County teams. In addition, the Bearcats Most Valuable Player was selected to the Meridian Star's All-Area Team.
Alabama North All-Stars beat South
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) The North All-Star baseball team swept the South 7-4 and 4-2 Monday night.
Ryan Harbuck of Hoover drove in the game-winning runs in both games of the double-header. Harbuck was named Most Valuable Player and drove in a total of four runs.
Tallassee's Brandon Peters went 2-for-2 with two RBI for the South.
I liked playing with a bunch of guys who really know what they're doing. We have a lot of talent on this team,'' Peters said.
The North came from behind for victory in the second game.
In that game, Harbuck led the North with a double that scored two runs in the fifth inning. Harbuck later scored on a balk.
