A unique moment in world history which inspired the coming together of three diverse cultures is explored in an Islamic exhibit currently showing in Jackson.
The exhibit was originally developed as a companion to the Majesty of Spain exhibit currently showing a few hundred feet away at the Mississippi Arts Pavilion.
In addition to Muslim rule in Spain, the exhibit explores the culture group's civilization and contributions to the fields of philosophy, science, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, agriculture, commerce, architecture and the arts. Organizers said the tour also reveals how the Muslim's culture of tolerance, intellectual advancement and philosophy of reason and argument sparked Europe's enlightenment, bringing it out of the Dark Ages and ushering in the Renaissance.
Equally impressive is the museum, which is located at 117 East Pascagoula St. According to Rashid, the building was refurbished and the facade features arches similar to the Cordoba Moorish Arch. Inside, the museum's floors feature imported, handmade Morrocan tiles and antique lanterns hang from the ceiling.
Admission is $7, adults; $4, senior citizens, children and the disabled; $5, adult groups of 20 or pore; and $3, children's groups. Tickets should be purchased at the museum.
