ALCORN STATE Three Lauderdale County residents were among 804 students named to the 2001 spring semester honor roll at Alcorn State University.
Tammie Nealy and Desshondra Walker were named presidential scholars with "A" averages. Latrecia Lewis was named to the Dean's List with a "B" average.
DECATUR, Ga. Dallas Lisa-Anne Brazile of Meridian received her psychology degree cum laude at Agnes Scott College on May 12.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Brazile.
STARKVILLE Mary Hill Shular recently completed a four-week program at Mississippi State University that gives high school faculty hands-on experience in industry and business.
Shular is a Career Discovery teacher at West Lauderdale Middle School.
The MSU course, part of the university's continuing education program, ended June 29. It was supported by the National Science Foundation and includes two follow-up sessions during the coming school year.
The program is designed to help teachers better prepare students for the workforce.
Area educators Faye Kinard of West Lauderdale High School, Tim Caldwell of Meridian Community College and Peggy Webb of Ross Collins Vocational Center helped coordinate the training.
Participants visited Northrop Grumman-Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding, based in Pascagoula; Pickering Engineering Associates, based in Jackson and the Tennessee Valley Authority electrical power production sites in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Chattanooga.
DECATUR Students who recently graduated from the surgical technology program at East Central Community College were:
Dottie Binkley of Meridian; Shameka Bailey and Christy Mulford, both of Union; Donna Reynolds and Revonda Edmond, both of Decatur; Brandy Mills of Newton; Tommie Wells of Forest; Jessica Beckham of Lawrence and Mandy Clark, Amanda Stanton and Keneen Childress all of Louisville.
DECATUR Lisa Gressett of Chunky is a United States National Award winner in childhood development technology by the United States Achievement Academy.
Gressett attends East Central Community College. She and her husband, Jackie, have two children. She was recommended for the honor by her professor, Mary Ann Wright.
Award winners appear in the academy's collegiate yearbook, published nationally. Criteria for award recipients include academic performance, leadership and citizenship.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. Martin Poynter, son of Pete and Susan Poynter of Douglasville, Ga. and grandson of Lillie Hughes of Meridian and Ruth Poynter of Memphis, Tenn., is a law clerk for Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor.
Poynter is working in the capital litigation division of Pryor's office, assisting attorneys who represent the state in death penalty proceedings.
Poynter, 23, is a 2000 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He minored in Spanish and Justice Science.
Poynter will enter his second year at the University of Alabama School of Law in August. He is in the top 20 percent of his law class and a recipient of the Dean Nathaniel Hansford Service and Leadership Award.
Poynter was elected president of the Future Trial Lawyer's Association and vice president of the International Law Society. He is a member of the Student Board of the Public Interest Institute, the Student Bar Association, the Defense Lawyers Association and the Criminal Law Association.
