Mississippi State University has developed a program that will help engineers and land surveyors registered in Mississippi to comply with a newly established continuing professional competence requirement.
The new rule, passed by the Mississippi State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, requires all non-exempt registrants to obtain a certain number of annual professional development hours, more commonly called PDH.
While many professionals and firms have previously participated in professional development on a voluntary basis, the training was not mandatory until this year.
Each engineer registrant is required to obtain 15 PDH units and each land surveyor registrant is required to obtain 12 PDH units during the year. Dual registrants shall have 18 PDH units, with at least one-third in each profession.
Of the requirements, ethics training must account for one PDH unit during the year for all registrants, and land surveyors must obtain one PDH unit of minimum standards training.
Mississippi State University's College of Business and Industry, Division of Business Services, has developed short, not-for-academic credit, courses to meet the requirements.
Program and course development was done with input from the board of registration and numerous engineers statewide, as well as with research from engineer training programs in other areas of the country.
