A Meridian man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly shooting another man in the stomach.
Lt. Wade Johnson of the Meridian Police Department said Willie A. Jackson, 24, of 3129 Fifth St., was charged with aggravated assault. The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of 16th Street and Ninth Avenue.
The victim, a 24-year-old man also from Meridian, was transported to a local hospital, Johnson said, where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the stomach. He remained hospitalized in stable condition this morning.
Johnson declined to release the victim's name, but said he had identified Jackson as his attacker. Investigators do not yet know what led to the shooting, or if there were witnesses.
Meridian police received an anonymous tip as to Jackson's whereabouts, and he was arrested without incident at an apartment near 34th Avenue and Fifth Street about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Johnson said.
His bond was set at $25,000. Johnson said the shooting is under investigation and declined to release further details. Jackson remained in custody at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility at press time.
