Shirley Burton: An outstanding teacher

By Staff
August 5, 2001
As an economics teacher at Meridian High School, Shirley Burton has a vested interest in the quality of public education. Her students represent the future of our community. She works hard to give them the information and perspective they will need as they plan their own careers. She is devoted and committed.
It's no wonder, then, that Ms. Burton, already an accomplished teacher, has received new honors. She was selected last week as the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club State Teacher of the Year. Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and the Miss America organization joined together to recognize and reward teachers who have distinguished themselves as leaders and mentors.
The distinction has some financial rewards both for Ms. Burton and Meridian High, but the recognition itself may be rewarding enough. She was selected from her peers by her peers and that sort of recognition is worthy of note.
