DECATUR The East Central Community College Board of Trustees named an interim head baseball coach and accepted the resignation of the school's basketball coach during their monthly meeting Tuesday.
Jake Yarborough has been named interim baseball coach for the Warriors. A graduate of East Central Community College, Yarborough served as assistant coach to head coach Jamie Clark, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this summer.
Prior to joining the ECCC staff, Yarborough served as head coach at Taylorsville High School. He is also a former graduate assistant coach at Delta State University. In addition, he is a former assistant coach at Union High School and a student assistant at ECCC.
Yarborough is a graduate of Union High School, ECCC and Delta State, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's in physical education.
Meanwhile, East Central is now looking for a new men's head basketball coach.
Jay Bowen has resigned to become an assistant men's basketball coach at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tenn. Bowen, who was in his second tour of duty at ECCC, compiled a 34-45 record during the past three seasons. He previously led the Warrior teams from 1989-1991, in which time his teams posted a 30-21 record. His 1990-1991 team went 21-6.
ECCC President Dr. Phil Sutphin said a search for a new coach would begin immediately. Applicants for the position should contact Terry Underwood, athletic director, at 635-2111.
