Lee Shulte has been named coordinator of The Meridian Star's literacy program known as Newspapers in Education.
The program places newspapers in classrooms at no cost to schools. The papers are provided through sponsorships that cover the cost; educators use the papers to inform students and enhance their education.
Shulte has been active in education since her children started school. She has been a member of West Lauderdale Elementary PTO since 1998 and has served as its president, vice president and treasurer.
The NIE program is available to all schools in Lauderdale, Clarke, Kemper, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee and Wayne counties in Mississippi and Choctaw and Sumter counties in Alabama.
Schools use newspapers to encourage students to think, compare, question and analyze information. Schools also use them to stress responsible decision making and participation in the democratic process.
Shulte has worked in accounting and auditor's positions since 1985.
She is a 1991 graduate of the University of West Florida in Pensacola, where she earned her master of business administration degree. In 1985 she received her bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from the University of Houston.
Shulte and her husband, Lynn, have two children, Jourdan, 9, and Derek, 6. Lynn is employed with Mississippi Power Co. The family moved to Meridian three years ago from Pensacola, where Lynn was employed with Gulf Power Co. The Shultes attend Poplar Springs Drive Baptist Church.
For more information on NIE, or to become a sponsor, call Shulte at The Meridian Star, at 485-1253 or 693-1551.
