Jo Lynn Walton of Meridian is the 2001-2002 Emma Ruth Corban Scholar at Meridian Community College. Walton, a sophomore in the University Transfer Program, is working on a degree in social work.
The annual $1,000 scholarship is funded through The MCC Foundation by an endowment established by Corban, a long-time teacher at Meridian High School and MCC.
Five Meridian Community College students John David Barr, Andy Thomas, Rea Brown, Julie Harper and Brad McKee will serve as the Dorothy McCauley Bates Scholars for the new school year.
The $1,000 scholarships are funded annually for outstanding students through The MCC Foundation from the Bates Scholarship Endowment. George Wade Bates of Birmingham, Ala., established the endowment as a memorial to his wife.
Barr, an honors graduate of Northeast High School, will begin his MCC studies in banking and finance. He spent five years on the Northeast golf team and was an All-American Scholar and a recipient of the President's Education Award.
Thomas, an honors graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center, is a freshman accounting major. He lettered in baseball and
football, attended Boys' State, served on the Lauderdale County Student Advisory Council and was a member of the Spanish Honor Society.
Brown is interested in studying accounting and business at MCC. She is a graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center, was a member of the HERO Modeling Squad and the National Honor Society. She won the Innovative Technology Award, the Economics Award and an Award of Excellence.
Harper, a graduate of Clarkdale Attendance Center, is entering MCC as an accounting major. She was a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of the Business Award.
McKee is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School. A National Merit Award winner in chemistry, he plans to study mathematics in the University Transfer Program and will play on the Eagle baseball team at MCC.
