The Earth Lab at The Duncan M. Gray Episcopal Camp and Conference Center recently named John Ewing as its naturalist an environmentalist who teaches students of all ages about caring for Earth.
In addition to instructing various Earth-related courses, Ewing will also help groups through the Earth Lab challenge course. The challenge course gives schools, businesses, church groups and non-profit organizations a chance to learn critical thinking and effective communication skills in an outdoor setting.
Ewing holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Tennessee Tech. After completing his undergraduate degree, Ewing received a master's in biological sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Bobby L. Eller, son of Vicki Eller of Meridian, recently enlisted in the Air Force Delayed Enlistment Program.
Eller, a 1999 graduate of Meridian High School, is scheduled for enlistment in the regular Air Force on Oct. 16. After graduating from the six-week basic training course near San Antonio, Texas, Eller is scheduled to receive technical training in the Mechanical Aptitude career field.
Army Pvt. Goeffrey Rhene has graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo.
During the training, Rhene received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history and traditions.
Rhene is the son of Winnie Rhene of Meridian. He is a 1998 graduate of Meridian High School.
Several residents from the area have recently joined the U.S. Air Force. They include the following:
Letitia Clark, daughter of James Clark and Barbara Hopson. She is a 2000 graduate of Meridian High School.
Tiffany Boler, daughter of Jay Boler and Margie Bell. She is 2001 graduate of Philadelphia High School.
James Moore, son of James and Dora Moore of Scooba. He will graduate in 2002 from Kemper County High School.
Tanya Davis, daughter of Willie Davis and Jo Staton. She will graduate in 2002 from Meridian High School.
Jessie Barnett, son of Jessie and Deborah Barnett of Heidelberg. He is a 1997 graduate of Northeast Jones High School.
After completing six weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas, each one will receive technical training in the Aircraft Armament Systems career field.
They will earn credits toward an associate in applied sciences degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Real estate examinations were held for the month of August in Jackson for people desiring to enter real estate sales, real estate rentals and other related activities.
The following Lauderdale County residents were issued licenses in sales: Sharon Pompelia, Sally Skipper and Gerri Mendenhall.
