With hunting season just around the corner, The Meridian Star 2001 Outdoor Expo at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center is set to kick off next week.
The two-day event opens Sept. 15 and will feature 70 booths of exhibitors who will display outdoor recreation products. The event also will feature speakers, dealers, manufacturers and outfitters.
Otha Barham, outdoors editor for The Meridian Star, will host "kids friendly" seminars for beginning deer hunters. Barham said that he is looking forward to the Outdoor Expo.
Barham said he expects the family-oriented event to attract a large number of people interested in attending deer hunting seminars.
Turkey hunters also will have their share of fun with national champion turkey caller Jack Dudley, who will give pointers on turkey calling and hunting.
Terry Vandeventer, an international herpetology specialist and authority on reptiles, will present a series of seminars called "Snakes of Mississippi."
Vandeventer will teach people about safety
measures in handling venomous snakes. He also will talk about how snakes are helpful.
Live fishing demonstrations will also be staged at the Outdoor Expo. Professional fishermen will use a 40-foot-long, 5-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide tub to illustrate proper fishing techniques.
Besides the usual crowd of outdoorsmen, the Expo also could attract women. Barham said more women than ever are flocking to the sports of hunting and fishing.
