PHILADELPHIA The Neshoba County Sheriff's Department has been awarded a grant designed to provide a direct law enforcement link with county schools.
U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering, R-Miss., announced the $95,189 grant Wednesday from the U.S. Department of Justice's "COPS in Schools" program. The grant will fund a full-time, three year position in the sheriff's office.
The program funds the hiring of community policing officers to work in primary and secondary schools, including the salary and benefits of each new officer over three years. Pickering said it is an incentive for law enforcement agencies to build working relationships with schools to use community policing efforts to combat school violence.
