Weems sponsors substance abuse workshop
Weems Community Mental Health Center will sponsor a workshop Thursday about problems young people face in relation to substance abuse.
The workshop will meet from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. in the East Mississippi Electric Power Association auditorium. It is open to parents, teachers, counselors, youth leaders and other interested people. For information, call 483-4821.
Golf tournament to benefit American Cancer Society
Meridian Oncology Associates will host a benefit golf tournament at Lakeview Golf Course on Saturday. The four-man scramble will begin at 8 a.m. Only the first 36 teams will be accepted.

Forest hosting Horse Show
The Rotary Classic Horse Show is Saturday at the Forest/Scott County Coliseum at 151 Erle Johnston Drive in Forest.

Arts commission to hold meeting in Meridian
The Mississippi Arts Commission board will hold its quarterly business meeting Oct. 2 in Meridian. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at Union Station.
The MAC serves more than 1.8 million Mississippians through grants supporting programs that enhance Mississippi communities, assist artists and arts organizations, promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi's cultural heritage.
Sale to benefit Hilltop Homes
A giant yard sale will take place Oct. 4-5 at Hilltop Boys Home, 7297 Highway 29 North. The sale begins both days at 7 a.m. and continues until dark. All proceeds will go to the Hilltop Boys and Girls Homes. For information, call 482-0432 or 485-2933.

Clarke County hosts annual forestry festival
The 12th Annual Forestry and Wildlife Festival will be Oct. 6 at Archusa Creek Water Park in Quitman. The event will feature live entertainment, taxidermy displays, archery competition and tours of the lake and park .

Alzheimer's Walk set for Oct. 6
The Alzheimer's Memory Walk is set for Oct. 6 at Bonita Lakes. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m.; the walk is at 9 a.m. Participating counties include Clarke, Jasper, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Smith. For information, call 483-4720 or 484-6180.
St. Joseph hosts OctoberFest
St. Joseph Catholic Church will host an OctoberFest and Family Fun Day on Oct. 6. The event starts at 11 a.m. on the church grounds at the corner of 19th Street and 18th Avenue.
Activities include basketball, volleyball, sack races, horseshoes and tug-of-war. An early-bird rummage sale begins at 8 a.m. Barbecue chicken and fish plates will be on sale for $5.

Benefit for firefighters' families set for Oct. 6
Meridian firefighters and Lauderdale County Volunteer firefighters will hold a benefit for the families of firefighters killed at the World Trade Center.
The event will be held Oct. 6, from 10:30 a.m. -2 p.m. at the Frank Cochran Center. Barbecue plates for $6 include pork, potato salad and baked beans. Tickets are available from any State Farm Agent.
IRS, state offering free seminar
Tax preparers and others interested in electronically filing federal and state income tax returns in 2002 may attend a free seminar Oct. 11 at Meridian Community College, Webb Hall, Room 100.
The seminar is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and the Mississippi State Tax Commission.

St. Patrick hosts annual fall festival
St. Patrick School will host its annual Fall Carnival and Spaghetti Dinner on Oct. 27 in the St. Patrick Family Life Center, next to the school at 2700 Davis St. in Meridian.
The event will be from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.; admission is $1 per person, with a maximum of $5 per family. The carnival will feature food, lots of fun games, a costume contest, a haunted house and much more.
Spaghetti dinners, at $5 a plate, will be served from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. take-out is available. Orders of 10 or more plates can be delivered.
Farm Service Agency needs volunteers
The Lauderdale County Farm Service Agency is looking for people to serve on the FSA Farmer-elected Committee. For information, call the agency at 483-4100, ext. 2. Oct. 29 is the last day to file nomination forms.
