DECATUR Decatur Mayor David Griffin could be back to work as early as next week, Police Chief Mark McDonald said this morning.
Griffin was shot twice in the leg Monday night during an armed robbery at his downtown Decatur convenience store, Big G's. He underwent surgery at University Medical Center in Jackson late Monday night to remove bullet fragments from his leg.
McDonald said police are still investigating the robbery, although few leads are coming in. McDonald said he could not be specific about possible leads, if they are solid or if residents have called the department with information.
The robbery occurred outside Griffin's store after he locked up. He was confronted by a gunman in a ski mask who demanded money. He was shot once in the leg during a scuffle and once more in the leg as he fled the scene.
In all, five bullets were fired from a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun. One bullet was retrieved from a trash can, McDonald said.
The suspect is described as a tall male, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds.
