Lamar School Head Coach Mac Barnes is hoping to see a new bounce out of his Raiders. On Friday, Lamar School heads to Louisville to battle the defending Class AA champions in Winston Academy.
This will be the second defending Mississippi Private School Association champion the Raiders have faced this season. They were beaten 35-14 by the Class A champs from Heidelberg in week three.
Winston will provide another tough challenge, but Barnes said his focus has been on re-charging his team after last week's embarrassing 31-12 loss to Oak Hill. The loss spoiled the Raiders homecoming and dropped them to 2-3 on the season.
Winston enters with a 4-1 record. The only loss was to AAA champ North Delta School 31-9. Winston defeated Marshall Academy 27-20 last week. They also own wins over Leake Academy 38-12 and Benton 47-7.
They still have a good quarterback. They are also a fast team. They have a good number of tall boys who can run."
Winston is led by quarterback Jay McMillin and running back Scott Peterson. McMillin threw for 116 yards and a touchdown in the win over Leake Academy.
Peterson rushed for 128 yards in the win over Leake and then added 164 more in the rout of Benton. He scored four times in the two games.
Kenneth and Caleb Metts are two more big-play types. Kenneth Metts ran back an interception for a TD in the Benton contest.
Lamar has averaged 18.6 points per game scoring but has allowed 26.4. Barnes said his team is beat up from its tough, first-half schedule.
Quarterback Drew Moffett was involved in a minor automobile accident on Saturday but was not hurt and is expected to play at Winston. Linebacker Monroe Mayfield is also expected back. He left after one quarter against Oak Hill with a bruised knee.
Cameron Coleman keys the Raiders ground game. He had two long runs to set up touchdowns in the Heidelberg game.
