It took just under 45 minutes for the Meridian Lady Wildcats' volleyball team to dispatch St. Andrews here in a first round state playoff match at the Wildcats Gym.
Meridian romped past the out-manned Lady Saints 15-6 and 15-2 to take the match and move on to the second round. The Lady Wildcats, now 16-4, will face the winner of the Horn Lake-Starkville match on Tuesday. Meridian will have to travel to the winner.
For Lady Wildcat senior Regina Williams, the victory was a great way to close out her final home match.
Williams was able to team up with fellow senior Patricia "Tootie" Lanier to combine for 10 kills in the match.
In the first game, St. Andrews got off to a 2-0 start but Meridian rallied for six straight to go up 6-2. Marissa Mendiola, Williams and Megan Mendiola had aces in the run.
The Lady Saints got two more points to make it 6-4 but Meridian then reeled off eight straight points to take command off the serve of Jennifer Toole. Lanier had a pair of kills in the spurt while Valarie Hammond and Marissa Mendiola had one.
Up 14-6, Lanier served out the game.
In game two, Hammond served five aces to go with a kill by Williams to go up 6-0. It was 8-0 before St. Andrews finally got on the board.
Two kills by Lanier followed by aces from Megan Mendiola and Toole put Meridian up 12-1.
Marissa Mendiola served out the match with Williams getting the final two kills.
Lanier finished with six kills while Williams had four. Hammond and Marissa Mendiola had one each. Marissa and Megan Mendiola each had two aces.
If Meridian can pull out a road match win in the second round, they would advance to the State Final Four set for next Saturday at Madison Central. St. Andrews concludes its season with a 14-12 record.
