Meridian police are expected to begin extradition proceedings today against a Louisiana man charged with murder in the weekend shooting death of an out-of-town man.
The shooting occurred Saturday in Meridian.
Lt. Wade Johnson, a Meridian Police Department spokesman, said that Monroe, La., law enforcement officials arrested Dominique Jefferson, 26, on Saturday.
It is unknown if Jefferson will waive extradition.
Johnson said the shooting occurred on the side of the road on St. Paul Street near North Frontage Road. He said the victim, Frederick O'Neal, 27, of Atlanta, apparently was passing through town.
O'Neal was taken to Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead on arrival, Johnson said, adding that it isn't known how many times O'Neal was shot or with what type gun.
No motive has been established, Johnson said.
The department's Violent Crimes Unit has been interviewing witnesses since the alleged shooting; more are expected to be interviewed today.
