JACKSON – Back in August, Nanih Waiya would have likely accepted the Class 1A state runner-up slow-pitch softball trophy with huge smiles.
But after being run-ruled twice by Myrtle in the 1A title series at Legion Park Saturday, the Lady Warriors had no smiles at all.
Myrtle took a 15-5 win in the opener and posted a 12-2 victory in the second game.
In the first game, Myrtle scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Lady Hawks went up 6-0 with four runs in the top of the third and led 9-0 before Nanih Waiya scored twice in the bottom of the fourth.
Nanih Waiya closed to within 9-3 with another run in the bottom of the fifth only to have Myrtle break the game open with six runs in the top of the sixth.
Ashley Pugh, Jaimee Jones, and Jennifer Ingram each had two singles for the Lady Warriors, while Liz Kirk added a triple. Nanih Waiya had 10 hits.
Candace Conlee had a single and a homer for Myrtle. Anna Williamson and Anna Cooper both went 2-for-4 with Brittany Robbins adding a homer.
Nanih Waiya jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game as Christy Hickman tripled and scored on a single by Pugh. Pugh scored on a single by Jessica Oswalt.
Myrtle drew even with single runs in the first and second frames and broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Hickman had a single and a triple to lead Nanih Waiya. Jones and Courtnee Graham both had a pair of singles. Nycole Hemphill added a double.
Cooper had a pair of doubles for Myrtle. Williamson, Tia Dye, and Sheena Hall each had a pair of singles.
