Lady Cougars win tourney

DECATUR The Newton County Lady Cougars captured their own season-opening tournament with a 76-57 win over Bay Springs Saturday night.
The Lady Cougars used a full-court press to grab a 21-9 lead after one quarter and were up 43-33 at halftime.
Bay Springs got to within seven with a quick 3-pointer to open the second half, but the Lady Cougars scored 18 of the next 23 points to go up 61-41.
Kristin Chaney led Newton County, 2-0, with a career-high 27 points. She hit four 3-pointers. Kristin Headrick and Yolanda Johnson both added a dozen points with Phyllis Cole scoring eight and Dominique Mapp adding six.
Bay Springs, 1-1, got 17 points from freshman Kristy Martin, 12 from Alleigha Wilson, 11 from Ebony Page, and 10 from Quaya Payton.

The Lady Trojans outscored Philadelphia in all four quarters in evening their record at 1-1 with the consolation game victory.
Northeast led 5-4 after one quarter, took a 21-16 advantage into halftime, and was up 36-22 going into the fourth quarter.
Quin Jackson led Northeast with 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Shaquita Bell scored 16 with 10 coming in the second quarter. Crystal Hopson added eight.
Philadelphia, 0-2, got eight points from Shekara Young and six each from Erica Clemons and Dominetrix Hunter.
