SCOOBA Veteran East Mississippi Community college head women's basketball coach Dale Peay is counting on sophomore experience and more depth at point guard to help his Lady Lions improve on last year's 2-20 mark.
Among those vying for playing time at the point for EMCC are Allison Power of New Hope, Candace Spires of Yazoo County and Katrina Barr of West Point.
One of the key returnees is former Kemper County High School standout Kenyatta Moore.
The 5-foot-8 forward is mostly a finesse player for the Lady Lions, but can play inside or outside.
Moore averaged 11 points per game last year. Also returning to help Moore put some points on the board is Donna Franklin of Meridian.
Franklin, who played softball her first year at EMCC, before turning to basketball, averaged nine points and seven rebounds a game for the Lady Lions last season.
Also coming back off last year's team is Kelly Peoples. She led the team in blocked shot last year, despite being a guard.
Peoples, of Marion, Ala., averaged 5.7 points and six rebounds a game last season. The fifth sophomore is Natalie Williams.
Erica Ray, who was set to see heavy action at the point last year before going down with a knee injury, is set to see action at the two-guard and the point.
Peay is also counting on a lot of help from former Northeast Lauderdale Standout Dorecious Powe.
Powe, at 5-foot-11, will play the small forward for EMCC, while Michelle Shaffer is expected to see a lot of action in the post.
Other freshmen Peay is counting on are Margaret McClure from Central Academy, Constance Logan of Maben and Monique Demus of Yazoo County.
EMCC opens its season at MCC on Monday.
