QUITMAN The Lady Trojans of Northeast Lauderdale won its second game of the season with a 52-40 win over Quitman on Thursday night, while the NEL boys opened their season with a convincing 67-50 win.
Quitman returns to action when it hosts Meridian High School on Thursday night, while Northeast Lauderdale visits West Lauderdale on Saturday. Both games were initially scheduled for Friday but were moved because of high school football playoffs.
In the girls game, Quitman jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, and maintained control throughout the first half. The Lady Trojans refused to give up, even though they were out-sized. The Lady Panthers sported a 13-point lead at halftime, however, due to turnovers the Lady Panthers watched as their lead vanished quickly.
The Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Panthers 22-8, in the third quarter, making the 13-point Quitman lead disappear. "When you don't get to score points, and they are scoring lay-ups, it doesn't take long to watch 13 points leave," Morgan said.
The Lady Trojans were led in scoring by Quinn Jackson with 24, Shaquita Bell with 15, and Crystal Bell with nine.
The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Ebony McKenzie with 11, Mashana Bonner with seven, and Shaquilla Mack and Shalanda Carter had six each.

The Trojans caused several turnovers that made for some key points early in the game thanks to a full-court press defense.
The Trojans led 40-22 at the half.
NEL was led in scoring by Martin with 17, and Dekenno Winton with 14. Quitman was led in scoring buy Jason Pearson with 15, and Bobby Sumrall with 9.
