Local Veteran's Day observances set this week
The Memory Tree Foundation invites the public to participate in Veteran's Day activities beginning Thursday. Yellow ribbons will be hung Thursday and Friday at the Doughboy Monument in downtown Meridian, at the corner of 23rd Avenue and Sixth Street.
The Veteran's Day memorial service will begin Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the monument, and a flyover by pilots from Naval Air Station Meridian is scheduled for 11 a.m. The Veteran's Day parade will begin at 3 p.m.
Salvation Army taking applications for holiday help
The Salvation Army will accept applications for Christmas assistance today and Friday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Photo identification is required for everyone in the household. Interested people must apply in person at 117 Sixth Ave. For information, call 483-6156.
Wesley continues Christmas registration
Wesley House Community Center will take applications for Christmas assistance through Friday.

Entry deadline for Christmas parade extended
The Meridian Downtown Association has extended the deadline to Nov. 16 for entry in the Christmas parade. Applications may be picked up at LaBiche Jewelers, Trustmark Bank, Loeb's, Liberty Shop, Wrangler Furniture, Harry Mayer, Caf Latte and Union Planters Bank.
The parade is set for Nov. 29. The theme of this year's parade is Rock n' Roll Christmas. The entry fee is $20 per unit.
Mediator barbecue set for Saturday
The 32nd Annual Church of the Mediator Barbecue is set for 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the church. Plates will include pork or beef barbecue, cole slaw, baked beans and Texas toast for $6. Three-pound packages of pulled pork or beef will be sold.
A freezer/bake sale featuring casseroles, gumbo, red beans and rice, breads and desserts will be held in the parish center. Arts and crafts and children's activities will also be offered. All proceeds will go to local charities.

Stephen Kirkpatrick to hold book-signing
Wildlife photographer Stephen Kirkpatrick will sign copies of his new book, "Wilder Mississippi," from noon-2 p.m. Saturday. The book-signing session will take place at Hart-Hall Ltd., 1521 24th Ave.
Kirkpatrick has published more than 2,000 photographs in books and magazines. His photo collections are accompanied by passages describing the lure of the Mississippi wilderness.
MLT Guild to hold Fall Variety Shop
Meridian Little Theatre Guild will hold its Fall Variety Shop this weekend. The event is set for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. The theater is on Highway 39 North. For information, call 482-6371.
Public library hosts writing workshop
The Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library will host a free writing workshop from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the library. Richelle Putnam, an award-wining author and instructor, will conduct the workshop. Putnam is the author of the children's book, "Fallout," and has won many writing awards.

Suqualena VFD host blood drive
Many communities across the nation turned out to donate blood after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
That blood is now gone, and more blood is needed by area hospital patients suffering from cancer and heart disease. United Blood Service officials are asking the public to take time to donate and help assure there will be blood available whenever emergencies occur in our area.
The Suqualena Community Club will sponsor a community blood drive at Macedonia Baptist Church Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Baptist Outreach Building.
Sta-Home holds training
Sta-Home Hospice will sponsor a volunteer training session Monday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The hospice is at 1622 24th Ave. For information, or to make reservations, call Freda Smith at 485-8489.
Pictures with Santa' available at F.W. Williams House
The annual "Pictures with Santa" at the F.W. Williams House will take place from noon-3 p.m. Sunday. Pictures will be taken in the parlor of the Victorian home and will feature an elaborately decorated Christmas tree, as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Photography will be provided by Wayne Rawson's Portrait Studio. Photo packages range from $20 to $35. The event is sponsored by the 1897 Daisies. Proceeds go toward maintenance of Merrehope and the F.W. Williams House.

Retiree celebration set for Tuesday
Meridian's 4th Annual Retiree Celebration is set for Tuesday, from 6 p.m.-9 p.m., at Union Station. The event will include barbecue, door prizes and music from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Reservations are required by Friday and seating is limited. For information, call 484-6841.

AARP Tax Aide seeks volunteers
The AARP Tax Aide service is seeking volunteers to help senior citizens file tax returns. Volunteers will be required to complete training to do taxes the second week of January at Trustmark Bank.
Trainees will help file tax forms beginning in February meeting with senior citizens from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Meridian-Lauderdale County Library, and on Fridays at Trustmark Bank on Highway 19.
Meridian Civitans hold fund-raiser
The Meridian Civitan Club is hosting its annual Claxton Fruit Cake sales drive. One-pound cakes cost $3 at all Meridian banks, credit unions and Foodmax stores. Money from the cakes benefit area organizations sponsored by the club.
Information needed for book on veterans
A book is being prepared on the history of Neshoba County veterans who served during World War II. Information needed includes pictures and brief stories of the men and women who served.
