U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering and Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott announced Friday that the Housing Authority of Meridian will receive a $1.1 million federal grant.
The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development HOPE VI Demolition Funding Award. The money will allow the Meridian Housing Authority to demolish 148 units of severely distressed public housing at the Victory Village development.
Lott said the grant is important.
Derwin Jackson, executive director of the Meridian Housing Authority, said Meridian has "many old, public housing units … that are simply not suitable to live in. This HOPE VI grant is a step in the right direction toward moving families into safer and better housing options."
