The Union Yellowjackets will make their first playoff appearance in school history Friday night when they head down I-55 South just past Brookhaven to play Bogue Chitto in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs.
Union, 6-5, takes on a 10-1 Bogue Chitto team that is making history of its own as the 10 wins are a school record.
The Jackets lost a 23-20 thriller at unbeaten Puckett last week after falling behind 10-0 right off the bat. Union earlier dropped one-point games to Lake (31-30) and Pelahatchie (7-6).
Freshman tailback Anthony Johnson had 122 yards on 10 carries for Union last week. One of his runs produced a 96-yard touchdown.
Leading the Jacket defense with 11 tackles each were seniors Lee Warren and Tony Warren.
The Bogue Chitto Bobcats defeated Enterprise-Lincoln 20-10 last week.
Senior running back Dominique Addison led the Bobcats with 189 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and has over 1,000 yards rushing for the year. Senior tailback Denard Ferguson gained 84 yards and scored one touchdown on 17 rushes. Quarterback Jacob Leggett was 5-of-9 for 140 yards and a touchdown. Cody Wallace caught three passes for 52 yards.
Defensively, Bogue Chitto is led by Fred Smith, Caleb McCaffery and John Wallace.
The Bobcats' only loss was to unbeaten Mize (22-18).
Scott Central at Wesson
Scott Central defeated St. Andrew's 42-0 last week to improve to 6-5. The Rebels travel to Copiah-Lincoln Community College to play Wesson, 10-1. The Cobras bit Kemper County often in a 49-8 victory last week.
Richie Miller picked off three passes against Kemper to lead the Cobra defense.
Louisville at Shannon
Also in 4A, Louisville, 7-4, travels to Shannon, 10-1. The Wildcats scored 32 points in the first half in whipping Oxford 38-14 last week.
Shannon, whose only loss was to Tupelo in the season opener, spanked West Point 38-15 in the first round. Ken Topps passed for 264 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns in the Red Raiders' win.
Loyd Star at Newton
The Tigers, 9-2, host the Hornets, also 9-2, from just outside Brookhaven Friday
at E.L. Morgan Field in Class 2A action.
The Tigers scored 18 second-half points in beating McLaurin 32-0 last week. Leading offensive players for Newton are junior quarterback Laderrian Blaylock, senior wide receiver Bobby Lindsey, senior fullback Marquis Poole, and sophomore tailback Travaone Evans.
Loyd Star cruised past South Leake 40-0 in the first round after scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter. The Hornets defeated McLaurin 42-14 two weeks ago.
Two of the Hornets' scores against South Leake came on fumble returns. The Hornets held South Leake to 143 total yards.
Derrick Johnson led the Loyd Star offense with 126 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
Leading the Loyd Star defense are Matthew Delaughter, Cody Covington, Jermaine Hunter, Adam Speeg, Josh Reed, and Beau Morrison.
Newton's losses were to undefeated Newton County (21-7) and once-beaten Ackerman (28-7). Loyd Star's losses were to Bay Springs (26-0) in the season opener and Wesson (29-9).
Philadelphia at Collins
Philadelphia, 7-4, has the unenviable task of traveling to Collins, 9-2, in Class 3A.
Philadelphia held off Velma Jackson for a 35-28 victory last week, while Collins crushed Carthage 47-7 with all the scoring coming in the first half.
Both of Collins' losses came on forfeits for using an ineligible player at the beginning of the season in wins over Lawrence County and Quitman. Victims of the Tigers include Taylorsville (28-7) and Velma Jackson (14-13).
In beating Velma Jackson, Philadelphia got 119 yards from junior quarterback Tyler Threadgill and 109 from senior running back Kenshay Hunter.
Hernando at Noxubee County
In Class 4A, Noxubee County, 10-1, hosts Hernando, 10-1. The Tigers rolled past Lafayette County 20-0 last week, while Hernando nipped Kosciusko 15-14 on a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Hernando's only loss was a 32-30 decision to Shannon.
Noxubee blanked Lafayette County 20-0 last week. Hernando beat Lafayette 15-8 during the regular season.
Noxubee's lone loss was to Columbus (20-17).
Marshall at Winston Academy
In Academy AA action, defending AA state champion Winston Academy, 9-2, hosts Marshall, 5-5.
The Patriots blew past Kirk 29-12 last week, while Marshall fell 40-7 to North Delta in regular season games.
Lenny Boatner led Winston with 163 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Kirk.
In other playoff action, Sebastopol, 7-4, travels to Mize, 11-0, in Class 1A; while Leake Academy, 5-6, goes to Amite, La., to take on the 9-1 Oak Forest Yellow Jackets in Academy AA.
