HEIDELBERG The Meridian High School Lady Wildcats slipped past Heidelberg High School 59-56 Monday night to up their record to 5-2 on the season.
The Heidelberg boys defeated MHS, 86-69.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Oilers tried to make a run for the lead. However, some big foul shots proved to be the difference for the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Oilers had one last chance to put the game in overtime, however, being down by three points, a player-coach misunderstanding nullified the opportunity.
MHS looks to Mosley for leadership as she led the team with 22 points.
Latishea Jones scored 11 points en route to the win for the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Oilers were led in scoring by Catina Fowler 20, Latoya Walker 12, and Princess Bender added 10.
The Lady Wildcats will be in action again Nov. 27, when they travel to Jackson Lanier. The 1-3 Lady Oilers will face off with Laurel tonight, in their annual tournament, the Heidelberg Classic.
Oiles 86
Wildcats 69
The Heidelberg Oilers embarrassed Meridian en route to a 86-69 victory.
The 5A Wildcats look good on paper against a 3A Oiler squad, however, three-point shooting proved to be the difference for the Oilers.
Heidelberg has played MHS very close the past couple of years, and HHS head coach Ted Williams was convinced his team could win.
That meeting could come next month with Heidelberg and Meridian both entered in the Frazier-Yarbrough Classic at MHS. Also, the two teams are slated to play again Jan. 18 at the Wildcats gym.
Meridian could never overcame a 43-31 halftime set back.
The Oilers look to Derrick Turner for crowd pleasing slam dunks three against the Wildcats fine three-point shots, and leadership on the court.
Turner led the Oilers with 24 points, followed by Marvin McDonald 19, Cedric Pierre 13, and Jessie Jones added 10.
The Wildcats were led in scoring by Fred Cole with 18 and Tony Dunn with 16.
Meridian will hit the road as it will travel to Jackson Lanier on Nov. 27, while Heidelberg tangles with Laurel in the annual Heidelberg Classic tonight.
