MCC women still No. 6 until 2002
The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles improved to 13-0 with a pair of wins in the Delgado Classic in New Orleans last weekend, but will remain No. 6 in the NJCAA Division I poll at least until Jan. 8 when the next poll is released.
Also in the poll from Region 23 are the unbeaten Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson. The Lady Wolves check in at No. 15.
The top women's team is Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.
On the men's side, the No. 1 team as of the Dec. 4 poll is San Jacinto College-Central of Pasadena, Texas.
No Region 23 teams are ranked, although the defending region champion Rangers of Northwest Mississippi received votes.
Southern Union, the defending Region 22 champion and a two-time winner over Meridian this season, is No. 9 with a 10-0 mark.

ECCC announces winter camp
East Central Community College announces its first annual winter Pitching
and Catching Camp for ages 12 to high school juniors will be held Dec. 27-28, at Chris Gay IV Memorial Field on the Decatur campus.
Instruction will be provided from 8 a. m. to noon each day. Participants will be divided into groups according to age and ability.
Cost is $40 per camper, which includes insurance and a camp T-shirt.

Georgia Military finishes No. 1
Thanks to a 31-19 win over Butler County (Kan.) in the Sea Island Company Golden Isles Bowl at Brunswick, Ga., on Dec. 1, Georgia Military College was voted the No. 1 junior college football team in the nation for 2001. The win capped a perfect 11-0 season for GMC, while Butler finished 10-2 to place eighth in the final NJCAA poll.
Second place went to 12-0 Kilgore (Texas), a 14-7 winner over No. 14 Tyler (Texas) in the Red River Bowl at Bedford, Texas. Tyler finished 8-4.
Third place was claimed by 11-1 Dixie (Utah) after a 40-14 rout of No. 12 Rochester (Minn.) in the Dixie Rotary Bowl at St. George, Utah. Rochester finished 10-2.
Fourth place belonged to Joliet (Ill.) after a 14-7 win over No. 10 North Iowa Area in one half of the Pepsi Cola/Sigler Printing Bowl at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Joliet wound up 10-1, while North Iowa Area closed at 9-2.
In the other half of that bowl, unranked Ellsworth (Iowa) rolled past unranked Fergus Falls (Minn.) 43-14. A 49-21 drubbing of No. 9 Lackawanna (Pa.) in the Real Dairy Bowl at Pocatello, Idaho, earned 10-1 Ricks College the No. 5 spot. Jones finished No. 6, but did not receive a bowl bid despite a 10-1 record. Neither did No. 13 Mississippi Delta. East Central, 6-4, was among three schools receiving votes in the final poll.
In other NJCAA-sanctioned bowls, No. 7 Garden City (Kan.), 9-2, got by Scottsdale (Ariz.) 39-31 in the Valley of the Sun Bowl at Scottsdale, Ariz.; No. 11 Nassau (N.Y.), 8-3, eased by William Rainey Harper (Ill.) 16-13 in the Cannon Empire State Bowl at Garden City, N.Y.; and No. 15 Coffeyville (Kan.), 7-4, crushed Navarro (Texas) 49-14 in the Heart of Texas Bowl at Copperas Cove, Texas.

Wood scores 33 against EMCC
Northeast Mississippi Community College's 6-foot-9 freshman Qyntel Woods scored 33 points against East Mississippi in a 75-57 Tiger win at Booneville on Dec. 3. Amazingly, Woods made only six field goals, but was 20-of-27 at the free-throw line.

Making that Final Four run
Current MCC Men's Basketball coach George Brooks served as a student coach under Richard Williams at MSU during the school's famed NCAA Final Four appearance in 1996. Brooks played power forward for the Bulldogs from 1992-1994, before playing his senior season at the University of West Georgia.
