LIVINGSTON Amy Brignac of Enterprise and Constance Johnson of Hickory have been elected attendants in the 2001 homecoming court at the University of West Alabama.
Brignac, a UWA cheerleader, was elected freshman attendant as a representative of Sigma Pi fraternity. She is a biology major and the daughter of Mike and Barbara Brignac.
Johnson, an elementary education major, represented the Angelic Voices of Faith choir in the homecoming election. She is also active in the UWA choir, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the Campus Activities Board and the UWA Student Government Association. She is the daughter of Nelda Johnson.
Several third grade classes from Oakland Heights Elementary School recently attended the "MS Sings" performance at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson.
About 1,000 elementary music students from throughout the state attended. The program included a performance by singer Guy Hovis and dancers from the Choctaw Indian Tribe.
Meridian students joined other children in the audience singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful," which they learned in class.
The trip also included a visit to the Old Capitol Museum.
Teachers attending: music teacher Diane King, Lynn Florreich, Monica Smith, Kelly Speed and Sandra Crawford. Other chaperones were parents: Dayna Robinette, Bridget Hughes, Deborah Pickett and Anthony Grayson.
The following Ross Collins Career and Technical Center students were installed as club officers this semester.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) officers: Erin Reynolds, president; Pascha Brown, vice president; Tacara Arrington, secretary-treasurer; Kim Mosley, reporter; Jerrica Kelly, class representative.
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) officers: Niyah Ponder, president; Laneka Chaney, vice president; Marquita Brewster, secretary; DeQuanna Hicks, treasurer; Shea Cessna, reporter; Kristin Daniels, class representative.
Meridian High School Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) officers: Taiwan Joseph, president; Jimmy Trotter, vice president; Ashley Johnson, secretary; Mitch Johnson, treasurer; Lakeisha Smith, Tyeisha Smith, Talibah Robinson and Lonnie Collins, board members.
Wildcat DECA officers: Veronica Vickers, president; Nicholas Trotter, first vice president; Porsha Ramey, second vice president; Kristina Allen, secretary; Jennifer Moulds, treasurer; Stacey Apperson, historian; Ashley Porter, reporter; Danquisha May, Princess Jennings and Eric Smith, class representatives.
Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) officers: James Ryals IV, president; Andy Northrup, vice president; Megan Mendiola, treasurer; Leslie Carrie, secretary; Rob Gardner, parliamentarian; Michael Henderson, reporter; Tommy McCall, board member.
Fourth and fifth grade Explore students at Poplar Springs Elementary School recently attended The Earth Lab at Gray Center in Canton for a three-day, two-night stay.
The lab uses hands-on activities to help educate students on environmental issues and inspire them to live in a sustainable, mutually enhancing way with wildlife.
Ann Blackledge is the school's fourth grade Explore teacher, Jane Massey is the fifth grade Explore teacher.
Peggy Webb, business and computer technology instructor at Ross Collins Career and Technical Center, and Faye Kinard, chemistry teacher at West Lauderdale High School, recently attended the Advanced Technological Education Principal Investigators Conference in Washington.
The teachers have been involved with the "Learn to Work Project" for five years.
The Learn to Work initiative was developed in 1996 with a $1.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation in conjunction with Mississippi State University and Peavey Electronics Corporation. It enables teachers to apply workplace skills and practical application of industrial processes in the classroom.
Webb and Kinard were asked to represent MSU at the conference to showcase the project.
JACKSON William Fearing Reid Jr., of Meridian is a new member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary at Millsaps College.
Sigma Gamma Epsilon is a national geology honor society established to recognize achievement in geological societies.
Reid is a senior majoring in geology. He is the son of Dr. William and Marion Reid of Meridian.
DECATUR The Newton County Elementary School Talented and Gifted program held its first Invention Fair on Nov. 19 and 20.
The students were required to come up with new and original products that would cost them under $10 to make.
Some of the ideas displayed included: a VCR protective cover to keep young children from sticking toys into the VCR opening; a combination book mark and book carrier; heated mittens for people with arthritis; and a night vision tackle box.
Second grade winners were: Marquis Brown, first place; Will Thompson, second place; and Kaitlin Dean, third place.
Third grade winners were: Chelsey Griffin, first place; John Corbin Evan, second place; and Michael Dover, third place.
Fourth grade winners were: Ashley Gressett, first place; Kirby Keith, second place; and Cody Addy, third place.
Fifth grade winners were: Nikki Weir, first place; Ethan Chance, second place; and Jammie Mitchell, third place.
Sixth grade winners were: Wayne Dowden, first place; Kellye Reeves, second place; and Dylan Harris, third place.
Winners of Best Display Boards were: Haley Huey, first place; Parker Bullock, second place; and Lacey Gilmore, third place.
