Lamar boys win ECCC opener

DECATUR Lamar School and Heidelberg Academy were among the first-day boys' winners in the fifth-annual MPSA Central Mississippi Classic at East Central Community College Wednesday.
Washington School and University Christian School also claimed opening-round wins in the boys' division.
Today's boys' games have Kemper Academy facing Winston Academy at 11:30 a.m. and Newton County Academy and Indianola Academy tangling at 2:30 p.m. in elimination games. Winner's bracket action has Leake Academy playing Lamar at 5:30 with top-seeded Starkville Academy facing Heidelberg at 8:30.

The Raiders outscored Kemper in all four quarters as they improved to 2-5.
Lamar placed three players in double figures. Joe Bryant scored 17 points, while David Haggard and Jace Hill both had 12. Cooper Huff added six.
Lamar led 7-6 at the end of a sluggish first quarter and carried a 21-15 lead into halftime.
The Raiders opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to go up 27-15 with Bryant scoring two baskets during the run.
Kemper used seven points from Adam Davis during an 8-0 run to get to within 32-27 with 1:07 to go in the third period.
Kemper trailed only 40-32 before an 11-1 Lamar run clinched the victory for the Raiders.
Kemper, 3-8, got 21 points from Davis and 11 from John Warren.
Heidelberg 39

The Rebels beat the Generals for the third time this season with the seven-point victory.
Heidelberg scored the game's first seven points, but NCA scored the next eight to lead 8-7 after one period.
NCA still led by one (18-17) at halftime.
The Rebels used a 6-4 advantage in a chilly third period to take a 23-22 edge into the fourth quarter.
The Rebels outscored the Generals 16-10 in the fourth quarter to improve to 9-3 despite a dismal 13-of-36 showing at the free-throw line.
Heidelberg got 10 points from Blake Bass, seven from Lloyd Windham, and six apiece from Dusty Bass, Jonathan Cranford, and Don Edwards.
NCA, 4-8, got nine points from David White, eight from Dustin Jones, and six from Wil Bean.
Washington 57
Winston 50
Washington outscored Winston in every period but the first in improving to 9-2.
Winston led 16-13 after one quarter only to have the Generals take a 32-29 lead into halftime. Washington led 46-42 to start the fourth quarter after leading by as much as 44-31 in the third period.
Winston, 9-2, got 18 points from Caleb Metts, 14 from Jonathan Stevens, and 11 from Blake Fulton.
Will Dottley led Washington with 22 points. Ken Ibsen scored 14 and Collin Tackett added 13.
University Christian 45

The defending tournament champion Flames built a 29-point lead over the first three quarters in improving to 11-3.
UCS led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, held a 25-12 halftime advantage, and then outscored the Colonels 16-0 in the third quarter to go up 41-12.
UCS got a balanced scoring attack. Wes Prather had 10 points, Joel Rule tossed in eight, Glenn Ulrich scored seven, and Sully Clemmer, Jordan Wagner, and Jason Bardwell each had six.
Indianola, 5-12, got 11 points each from Dain Land and Parker Reynolds.
