STARKVILLE It was just a coincidence that Brett Nelson ran right in front of the student section that had taunted him all night after hitting the game-winning shot. That's Nelson's story, and he's sticking to it. Nelson hit a jumper with five-tenths of a second left to give No. 8 Florida a 81-80 victory over Mississippi State on Wednesday night.
The field is half the size it was a dozen years ago, and the name has been changed. But one mention of the Sam Dale basketball tournament brings back plenty of memories for area coaches.
The 2001 edition of the Sam Dale/Walter Ethridge Memorial Tournament tips off today at Northeast Lauderdale, one of three high school basketball tournaments in the area.

Travis McCullum hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining in overtime to ice a furious comeback by Bay Springs Friday night and help BSHS to a 69-66 win over Clarkdale in Division 7-2A action.
ENTERPRISE No matter the level of play, free throws win and lose basketball games time and time again. And that was just the case Friday night. Enterprise's Jon Chancelor connected on four consecutive free throws in the closing minute, and the host Bulldogs held off Newton 60-58 in semifinal action in the Enterprise Invitational Tournament.

Minnesota and Tampa Bay have new coachs, and Green Bay is close to getting their man, too. All the suspense ended in Tampa Bay on Friday when the Bucs named Sam Wyche as coach. The Vikings grabbed Dennis Green from the college ranks and made him the second black head coach in modern NFL history.
It was a good night for Meridian Friday. Both the boys and girls teams advanced to the finals of the Forest Tournament, but it was a struggle for each. the Wildcats beat host Bearcats 70-69, outscoring Forest 21-16 in the final period. The Lady Cats outscored Magee 25-18 in the fourth quarter to take a 64-54 victory.

Jimmy Williams
He's been blowing a whistle for 33 years, officiating everything from basketball, baseball, football, softball and even a little volleyball. For Meridian's Jimmy Williams, it's been all good.
He says his reasons for staying are simple.
Williams has been fortunate to call eight Mississippi High School Basketball Championship games and three Mississippi-Alabama All-Star football games.
