Area basketball races getting serious

Area basketball division races heat up this week as teams jockey for position in the upcoming division tournaments.
MHSAA division tournaments are scheduled to begin on Feb. 11 with MPSA postseason play beginning on Feb. 5.
In tonight's action, Choctaw Central hosts Southeast Lauderdale, Northeast Lauderdale hosts Kemper County, West Lauderdale travels to Carthage, Meridian hosts Starkville, Neshoba Central hosts Noxubee County, Heidelberg hosts Newton County, Newton goes to Scott Central, Sylva-Academy travels to Macon to face Central Academy, Clarkdale goes to Nanih Waiya, Union hosts Lake, Lamar School hosts Central Hinds, Enterprise goes to Sumrall, Quitman hosts West Jones, Bay Springs hosts Bassfield, Louisville hosts West Point, Newton County Academy travels to Wayne Academy, and Noxapater plays host to Kosciusko.
On Thursday, Louisville heads to Aberdeen for a tournament that runs through Saturday.
Friday's slate of games has West Lauderdale hosting Choctaw Central, Clarkdale hosting Scott Central, Meridian playing host to Heidelberg, Newton hosting Williams-Sullivan, Northeast Lauderdale hitting the road to take on Mendenhall, Quitman hosting Northeast Jones, Enterprise going to Seminary, Kemper Academy heading to Bay Springs to take on Sylva-Bay Academy, Southeast Lauderdale hosting Carthage, Newton County Academy going to Heidelberg Academy, Newton County traveling to Philadelphia, Wayne County going to Brandon, Forest hosting Collins, Kemper County traveling to Walnut Grove to take on South Leake, Lamar School going to Yazoo City to face Manchester Academy, Leake Academy traveling to Hattiesburg to tangle with Prebyterian Christian, Nanih Waiya going to Durant, Noxubee County hosting Starkville, Union going to Pelahatchie, and Winston Academy going to Carroll Academy.
In Saturday's play, Meridian travels to Terry to take on Jackson Murrah, Newton County Academy hosts Central Academy, Clarkdale hosts Sweet Water, Ala., Kemper Academy goes to West Point to play Oak Hill Academy, Winston Academy hosts Heritage Academy, Leake Academy hosts Prentiss Christian, and Wayne Academy hosts Presbyterian Christian.

Clarkdale visits West tonight
The Bulldogs of Clarkdale High School will put their 9-0 boys soccer record on the line tonight when they travel to defending league champion West Lauderdale for a makeup game at 6 p.m.
West Lauderdale is currently 11-4 on the season. The Knights visit Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and host Philadelphia on Thursday.
Clarkdale hosts Richland on Tuesday, visit Newton County High School on Thursday and host Wayne County on Friday.

Coaching searches continue
Meridian High School and Quitman High School continue their search for new football coaches.
MHS will soon begin interviewing potential coaches to replace Bill Sartin who resigned at the end of the 2001 season. Quitman High School is looking for a successor for longtime head man Charles Faulkner, who is retiring at the end of the season.
Faulkner stepped down on a good note, as the 2001 Panthers made the football playoffs for the first time in the school's history.

Meridian's Denham injured
Standout sophomore goalie Sarah Denham suffered a separated shoulder on Sunday and could miss the rest of the soccer season.
Denham, who has been starting for the Lady Wildcats for the last two seasons, was participating in tryouts for the state's Olympic Development Team in Jackson when she was injured while going through drills.
She fell on her left shoulder, and had to be taken off the field in an ambulance.
She was taken to Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson where her shoulder was set.
The Lady Wildcats, who are currently 11-3 on the year, visit tough Brandon High School on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
MHS is ranked No. 5 in the state, while Brandon is No. 1.

Spring schedules needed
Area coach are asked to send in brackets to all basketball tournament in which they may be participating.
Also the time is now to send in baseball, softball, track, golf, tennis and either other spring related schedules into the star.
They can be mailed to Sports, P.O. Box 1591, Meridian, Miss. 39302, or sent by fax to 1-601-485-1275 to the attention of Ryan Satcher or Austin Bishop.
Also football coaches who already know when their spring football practice will take place are asked to send in that information. The Star is also gathering a list of scheduled spring games and would also like for football coaches to go ahead and send in their 2002 schedules.

Let's play at home
Four of Lamar School's next five basketball games will be played at home..
The Raiders host Leake tonight and Central Hinds on Tuesday, before traveling to Yazoo City to take on Manchester on Friday. Then come homes gains with East Rankin, Jan. 22 and Central on Jan. 25.
