Two programs at the Meridian/Lauderdale County Public Library have the same goal in mind: show children that reading is easy and enjoyable.
One program for children under 3 begins Thursday, another for children 4 – 9 has already started and meets on Wednesdays. Both are free to the public.
Preschool program
Brown also uses felt boards and leads the children in song during the half-hour class. Parents also must attend and can participate in the class with their children.
After the class, parents and children choose books from the library that are specifically selected for children under. Those books contain large pictures and have big words.
Older children
The program begins with Brown reading a book; children then watch portions of videos based on the book. Children also sing songs and play games. Refreshments are sometimes served.
Each week, the program will feature a different theme.
Brown's advice for parents: "Try to put some excitement into your voice when reading to children use gestures. "Do anything that catches the child's eye. Books can be more than printed words."
Library reading program:
To register for classes at the Meridian/Lauderdale County Public Library, call 693-6771. The library is at 2517 Seventh St. in Meridian. Children's classes are free and open to the public.
