The Carthage Tigers advanced to 7-11 on the season by defeating Southeast Lauderdale 49-46 Friday night at the SEL gym.
Carthage head coach Jimmy Nail described the game as a big win. "That was a big win for us," Nail said. "We'd lost four games in a row coming into tonight, we needed a win."
The visiting Tigers jumped out to an early 18-10 lead, but the SEL Tigers were not phased.
As the second quarter grew dim, the SEL Tigers outscored Carthage 18-10, to knot the score at 28-28 going into the halftime intermission.
Southeast came into the third quarter, and scored 19 points only to trail Carthage 40-39 at the end of the period.
The SEL Tigers chipped away at the lead in the final quarter, but they came up short-handed in the end.
Southeast took three timeouts in the final seconds of the game to try to allow Ben Reed an open look at a three-point basket to force overtime. Unfortunately, it didn't happen.
As the time expired, the SEL Tigers dropped to 4-19 on the season.
The SEL Tigers were led in scoring by Nehemiah Nwankpah with 18 and Reed with 16 points.
Carthage was led in scoring by Wallace Alexander with 21 and Wilfred Fletcher with 12 points.
Carthage will tip off against Newton County on Tuesday night, while Southeast will host Heidelberg for a division showdown.

Joe Miller's Lady Tigers picked up their 19th win of the season by defeating Carthage.
Despite a lack of players, Millers' Lady Tigers managed to slip past Carthage.
Samantha Smith led the SEL Lady Tigers with 17 points.
Southeast dropped 20 quick points on the visitors to take an early 20-12 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, Southeast Lauderdale outscored Carthage by four points to take a 36-24 halftime lead.
Carthage showed somewhat of a comeback in the third quarter, as it outscored scored SEL 10-9.
Finally in the fourth quarter, the SEL Lady Tigers matched the 12 points put up by the Carthage Lady Tigers.
The 19-6 SEL Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Smith with 17, LaShondra Hall with 16, and Lesley Ruffin with 10.
Carthage was led in scoring by Ashley Luckett with 12 points and Amanda Cook with 10 points.
Southeast Lauderdale will tangle with Heidelberg on Tuesday, while Carthage will host Newton County on Tuesday.
