Trojans grab 5-4A win

Northeast Lauderdale defeated Mendenhall 71-67 in Division 5-4A basketball action Friday night.
Mendenhall led 15-12 after one quarter, but the Trojans rallied to take a 36-31 lead into halftime. Northeast led by one (45-44) to start the fourth quarter.
Jamaal Martin had 22 points and Dekenno Winston tossed in 21 to lead Northeast. Stephen Dyess added a dozen points as Northeast improved to 19-4 overall and 3-0 in 5-4A.
The Trojans return to action Tuesday at Bay Springs.
Northeast Jones girls 59
Quitman 49
The Lady Tigers took a 23-20 lead into halftime and then outscored Quitman 21-15 in the third period to go up 44-35.
Quitman got 14 points from Ebony McKenzie and 12 from Shalanda Carter. The Lady Panthers return to action Tuesday at Wayne County.
Northeast got 11 points apiece from Erica Jones, Caren Jones, and Marquita Smith.

Mendenhall 53
The Lady Trojans improved to 14-12 overall and 2-1 in Division 5-4A with the road win.
Northeast trailed 12-10 after one quarter and 27-26 at halftime. Mendenhall still had a lead at 42-40 through three periods before the Lady Trojans used a 16-11 advantage over the final eight minutes for the win.
Mendenhall fell to 18-4.
Lake girls 65
Pisgah 40
The Lady Hornets upped their overall record to 16-3 and their Division 6-1A mark to 7-0 with the win at Lake.
Lake got 16 points from Kim Cox and 10 from Kimyatta Viverette.
The Lady Hornets led 24-7 after one quarter and took a 42-20 lead into halftime.
Quitman boys 59
Northeast Jones 56
The Panthers improved to 7-12 overall and 3-0 in Division 5-4A with the homecourt win over the Tigers.
Lorenzo White scored 22 points and had seven rebounds for Quitman. With eight seconds remaining, White converted a three-point play for the winning margin.
The Panthers also got 11 points from Jason Pearson.
Northeast led 16-12 after one quarter before Quitman rallied to take a 34-33 lead into halftime. The Panthers led by two (45-43) to start the fourth quarter.
Lake boys 75
Pisgah 64
Lake outscored the Dragons in each of the first three quarters in building a 54-41 advantage.
In improving to 5-13, Lake got 21 points from Willie Hickmon and 18 from Tyrone Harris.
Sumter Academy boys 71
Jackson (Ala.) Academy 37
Sumter improved to 10-4 with the 34-point blowout at Jackson.
John Upchurch had 15 points and 20 rebounds to lead Sumter. Shane Martin tossed in 18 points. Tucker Spidle scored 11 and Chase Schroeder added 10.
Wesley Arnold led Jackson with 12.
Sumter returns to action Tuesday by hosting Demopolis Academy.

The Lady Warriors fell to 16-9 with the two-point Division 5-1A loss at Durant. No individual scoring was available.

The Warriors lost by 31 in their Division 5-1A contest at Durant. No individual scoring was available.
Sumter Academy girls 45
Jackson (Ala.) Academy 28
The Sumter girls defeated Jackson by 17 points on the road to improve to 5-8.
Natalie Fox had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Sumter. Meridith Edmonds had nine points.
South Choctaw boys 56
Marengo Academy 38
Rob Dahlberg's game-high 24 points led South Choctaw to the win at Marengo.
SCA also got 11 points apiece from Brad Johnson and Jeffery Mason.
Brian Hasty led Marengo with 12 points.
South Choctaw girls 67
Marengo Academy 46
South Choctaw placed four players in double figures in knocking off Marengo on the road.
Taylor Andrews and Kelly Lewis led SCA with 14 points apiece. Shanna Kelly and Alanna Jackson both added 10 points.
Kate Griffin boys 72
Noxubee County 41
Kate Griffin Junior High won its 12th game of the season by pounding Noxubee County by 31 points Thursday night.
Leading the way for KGJH was Cornelius Griffin with 16 points, Jacoby Davis had 12, and Maurice Naylor added 11.
Noxubee was paced by Laquinta Horne with 17 and Albert Bush chipped in 16.
Kate Griffin's boys and girls return to action next week with the Big 7 Conference Tournament.
