Derby coming to town

Danny Hill remembers running his home-built soap box derby car down the hill on 22nd Avenue in downtown Meridian during the 1950s.
Now in 2002, Hill is hoping to bring that special memory alive again with a new Meridian Soap Box Derby.
On June 8, Hill is hoping to bring the Derby back to Meridian. He has received permission from the city to run the race on 23rd Ave.
While many of the bigger Soap Box Derbies have three divisions, Meridian is going to start small with just one division a stock division for boys and girls from the ages of 9 to 16.
So does the cost. The stock division is the least expensive. In the stock division, a car cannot be painted. But it can contain sponsor's decals.
Hill's goal is to have at least 25 entries.
Kids who enter the Meridian race will also have at least two chances to race.
Besides Meridian, there are also soap box derbies in Hattiesburg and Moss Point.
To get started, prospective entries should contact Hill at H&H Speciality. H&H is the primary race sponsor. They can request an entry form from Hill by calling either 483-2090 or at home at 737-4621.
