Meridian Police Chief Benny DuBose has let it be known from day one that he wants to make a change in the Meridian Police Department.
But, he said, he knows there are naysayers in the community who are waiting to see him fail.
Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith promoted DuBose from assistant chief a position he had held since 1993 and DuBose said he is already laying the groundwork for the department's improvement.
A lack of unity within the department and low pay are the top two issues on DuBose's agenda. And, he said, unifying the department will start with implementing a clear set of new goals.
DuBose said problems begin with officers not feeling that they have support from the administration and command staff.
The low pay that officers get for facing dangers on a daily basis "doesn't begin to be what it should," DuBose said.
Coming Monday
Meridian Police Chief Benny DuBose shares more goals and observations in an editorial board interview with The Meridian Star.
