Northeast Lauderdale may find scoring difficult when the Lady Trojans host George County Saturday in the second round of the Class 4A state soccer playoffs.
Until a 3-1 loss to Our Lady Academy last week, George County senior goalie Mary Browder had not allowed a goal for the entire season.
OLA, the two-time defending state champion for Classes 1A-2A-3A, blanked Clarkdale 9-0 in its first-round game.
Browder kept the Crescents out of net for the first half before Rachel Cranford ended the streak with a goal 13 minutes into the second half.
George County, 16-1-1, outscored its opponents 83-5 during the regular season, then opened the playoffs with a 4-0 win over Picayune on Tuesday.

Coca Cola to sponsor Baseball Tourney
Meridian Baseball Coach Vince McLemore says that Coca-Cola has become the official sponsor of the first Lauderdale County Baseball Tournament.
The tournanment is set to begin on Feb. 15. This is will be the season opener for five county teams along with visiting Neshoba Central.
The tourney starts at 4 p.m. when defending Class 3A State Champion West Lauderdale takes on Neshoba Central. The host Wildcats hit the field against Northeast Lauderdale at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, four games are on the slate.
At 10 a.m.: Northeast Lauderdale takes on Southeast Lauderdale. At 1, Clarkdale plays Southeast. At 4, Clarkdale faces West Lauderdale.
The tourney concludes with Meridian facing Neshoba Central at 7 p.m.

Softball Umpires meeting slated
The organizational meeting of the Meridian Softball Umpire Association for the 2002 year will be held Sunday at the Sammie Davidson Complex.
The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. All persons interested in officiating ASA and league softball are urged to attend. For more information call John McNeel at 681-6192.

Gulfport heads to new home
Gulfport ended its 49-year run in the B. Frank Brown Gymnasium with a 92-49 drubbing of the Biloxi Indians before a crowd of 2,100 on Jan. 25.
The Admirals opened the second half with a little trickery that led to a lot of humiliation.
Three of the Gulfport players went to the wrong goal, drawing the entire Biloxi team. Henry Salter inbounded at halfcourt to A.J. Magee who threw it back to Salter for an uncontested dunk.
Gulfport ended its time at B. Frank Brown better than it started it. The Admirals lost their first game 55-48 to Hattiesburg in 1953.
Gulfport christened its new home, the Bert Jenkins Gymnasium, on Thursday against Hancock. Jenkins won seven state championships and 13 Big Eight Conference championships in 28 years with the Admirals and the Commodores as the Gulfport boys were formerly known before consolidating with Gulfport East. His teams won 866 games.
The 42,074 square foot Bert Jenkins Gymnasium will seat 2,100. The playing surface is 114 by 117 feet and was built at a cost of $3 million.
Gulfport, which entered Thursday's contest with a 26-0 mark, is looking for its first unbeaten season since the 1974-75 team went 40-0. Gulfport's last state championship was in 1988.

Walters new coach at ACCS
Keith Walters has been chosen to replace Doug Clanton as head football coach at Adams County Christian School.
Walters is a former assistant coach at ACCS. His other stops include Chamberlain-Hunt Academy, Wilkinson County Christian Academy, and West Feliciana Middle School where he is currently athletic director and coach.
ACCS was 0-11 in 2001 and 5-7 in 2000 with one of the wins being a forfeit from Silliman Institute for using an ineligible player.

Clemons shines in loss
The loss to Wayne County spoiled a season-best game from Alexis Clemons.
The Lady Wildcat forward tossed in a season high 14 points.

South Panola chooses Woods
South Panola has named Ricky Woods its new head football coach. Woods, who went 90-8 in seven seasons at Ackerman, led the Indians to the Class 2A state championship in 2001.
Woods replaces Ed Stanley, who was 81-24 in eight seasons at South Panola.
