As a business and computer technology instructor at Ross Collins Career and Technical Center, Peggy Webb of Meridian constantly changes her curriculum to keep it up to date.
Because of her efforts, Webb learned last week that she will receive the Alan R. Barton Excellence in Teaching Award from the Mississippi Power Co. Education Foundation.
The award is presented annually to three outstanding teachers in grades kindergarten through 12 from schools in the Mississippi Power Co. service area.
The award includes $500 for the teacher, $500 for supplies in the teacher's classroom, and $1,000 for professional development in the teacher's department.
Webb applied for the award by writing a synopsis of the activities of her class.
She emphasized work in the school's "Learn To Work Program," which began seven years ago with a grant from the National Science Foundation and Mississippi State University.
The program brings teachers to various industries to receive first-hand experience in the subjects the companies need taught. Teachers then develop projects based on the industry's need.
Webb will be attending an award presentation and banquet in Gulfport on April 12.
After 17 years of teaching marketing in Mississippi school districts, Webb made the switch to Ross Collins as a business and computer technology instructor 14 years ago.
A business education and marketing major, Webb returned to school for her certification in business technology. She is one of the first vocational teachers in the state to achieve national board certification, which was offered for the first time last year.
