Longtime Meridian Community College President Bill Scaggs, businessman Tommy Dulaney and golfing legend Lou Weddington Hart were honored Saturday as inaugural inductees of the MCC Eagle Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony highlighted MCC's annual alumni reception in the college's new Dulaney Room, a multi-purpose meeting and banquet room at the rear of the campus' Webb Center.
The Dulaney Room was named after Tommy Dulaney.
Kathy Brookshire, MCC's new director of institutional advancement, said that the college started the Eagle Hall of Fame because "we wanted to recognize people who have helped to make MCC a special place and we wanted to start a photographic exhibit that would help to capture and preserve for perpetuity a sense of the institution's tradition of excellence."
MCC President Scott Elliott, now in his fourth year, said it was "entirely fitting" that Scaggs, his predecessor, became the first inductee into the Eagle Hall of Fame.
Scaggs served as MCC's president for 30 years and was well respected as a true visionary, Elliott said. He led the effort to establish innovative programs such as the "Tuition Guarantee" and MathFirst.
Dulaney, owner of Meridian's Structural Steel Services and an 18-year member of the MCC Board of Trustees was doubly honored at the ceremony.
First, he was recognized when the room was officially named "The Dulaney Room." Second, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame as an MCC alumnus.
Dulaney was named Mississippi's Philanthropist of the Year in 2001 for his contributions to groups like the MCC Foundation and numerous others. He also serves as chairman of the East Mississippi Business Development Corp. and several other community boards.
Hart, daughter of legendary Mississippi golfing great Hunter George Weddington, is "the most prolific female golfer in Mississippi history," Elliott said. Her record nine state amateur titles and six runner-up finishes is testimony to that fact, he added.
Hart, who has coached the MCC golf team to three regional titles and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA national championships, was a member of the first-ever golf team as a student at Meridian Junior College. That team also won the state junior college championship. She played on the men's team because there was no women's team.
In addition to the Hall of Fame inductions, MCC also honored employees with 30 or more years of service.
The honorees were Cheryl Shannon, Jack Shank, Jimmy Smith, Clarence Roberts, Mary Faye Wilson, Dietmar Goetz, Ronnie Miller, Jean Beckman, Jimmie Evans, Mary Fleming, Marjorie Cole, Ricardo Calderon, Scaggs, George Mangrum, Wilhelmine Damon, Sue Key, Minnie Bryan, Dr. Bob Hermetz, Steve Owen, and Amna Mathis (posthumously).
