A lot of folks were anticipating another Choctaw Central/West Lauderdale girls' clash in Thursday's semifinals of the Division 5-3A Tournament at Southeast Lauderdale. But West coach Jody Hurst insisted his team had a major obstacle in Tuesday night's first-round game against Velma Jackson, and he was right. Velma turned on the jets in the third quarter, then opened the final period by hitting 4-of-5 three-pointers and raced to a 71-59 win over West Lauderdale in the only girls' game in the tournament Tuesday.
RAYMOND Lamar School's hopes of pulling an upset in the first round of the MPSA AAA State Tournament all but ended in one four minute span. Prairie View (La.) Academy went on a 16-1 run early in the third quarter to turn a two-point lead into a 17-point cushion on the way to a 79-62 win.

The Northeast Jones High Tigers and No. 7 Laurel High Tornadoes will meet at 8 tonight at Northeast Lauderdale High for the Division 5-4A boys basketball championship. Northeast Jones advanced by knocking off the top-seeded Quitman High Panthers 71-50 Thursday night. Laurel High moved on easily with a 94-62 rout of the Mustangs of West Jones High.
NEWTON Maybe there's something to be said for the homecourt advantage. The Newton High boys, who entered the Division 7-2A tournament as the No. 5 seed, pulled off their second shocker in three days Thursday night, downing top-seed Taylorsville 74-70 in double overtime. With the win, the Tigers qualified for the South State playoffs and move on to Friday's 8 p.m. final against Bay Springs.

BRANDON Many Meridian High School basketball players fought back tears. Many didn't try. Perhaps their thoughts drifted back to a few minutes earlier wondering how they'd blown a 14-point fourth quarter lead against Wayne County here Thursday night at the Division 5-5A tournament. Or possibly their tears fell for their first-year coach Geary Jackson, who came from Wayne County and never attempted to hide the emotion he felt when playing his old school. Realistically, the sadness inside the Wildcats' dressing room after Norris Craft's 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer and Meridian fell 87-85 to the War Eagles came from what could have been.
