WAYNESBORO Everyone's heard the old adage, "The third time's the charm," only in the case of the Meridian High Wildcats, it took just a tad longer. Ernie Watson's club used grittiness and tenacity to overcome a hostile environment and a talented opponent as the Wildcats finally succeeded in securing a win over the Wayne County War Eagles, 70-66, in the finals of the Division 5-5A Tournament.
Awesome. No other word describes Friday night's Division 5-3A Tournament championship game, which was played in front of an overflowing crowd at Southeast Lauderdale. The host Lady Tigers, despite 56 points from Monique Horner, were outscored 109-99 by top-seeded and 10th ranked Choctaw Central Lady Warriors in a classic not soon to be forgotten.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. While Jeff Gordon and his teammates took their victory lap at the Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt was surveying the damage and Bill Elliott simply wanted to forget. After one of the most bizarre running of what they call The Great American Race at The Daytona International Speedway Sunday, Gordon was talking by cell phone to his troubled boss Rick Hendrick. There was Earnhardt, holding court nor far from what once passed for a Chevrolet.
With four teams in the Top Ten, the ACC is clearly the nation's best conference. Lately, though, its officials aren't upholding the league's lofty standards. For the second time in a week, a blown call in the closing seconds determined the outcome of an ACC game. This time the mistake dropped No. 2 Wake Forest out of first place. Clint Harrison was given credit for a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime even though he clearly stepped inside the arc and North Carolina State upended Wake Forest 60-59 Sunday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The Daytona 500 was a wreck, and Davey Allison cleaned up. The best thing about it for the 30-year-old racer may have been that his father was there to share it. The younger Allison led 127 of 200 laps and collected $244,050 from a $2.5 million purse. One third of the 42-car field was eliminated from contention when two-time race winner Bill Elliott, polesitter Sterlin Marlin and defending champion Ernie Irvan tangled on the backstretch on the 92nd of 200 laps.
