Family Matters Conference and Youth Rally
Both begin at 6 p.m.
Speakers for the parent conference will be Jim Cook, a motivational speaker and retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, and Judge Eric Andell, senior adviser to U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige.
Cook also will be the Youth Rally speaker. There will be a band, door prizes and a free Family Matters T-shirt (while supplies last) for participants who bring two canned goods.
Art for Heart holds fund-raiser
Art for Heart, a fund raiser for the American Heart Association will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Northwood Country Club.
The event will include a silent and live art auction. Artwork is on display at Cartmell Gallery until Thursday. Sealed preliminary bids will be accepted.

Health Fair in Meridian Thursday
The Partnership for a Healthy Lauderdale County will sponsor a Health Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at the Boys &Girls Club of Lauderdale County.
Blood pressure check, glucose screening and health and safety educational information will be provided by various agencies.

Order of Eastern Star celebrating Black History Month
In celebration of Black History Month, Louise Chapter 426, Order of the Eastern Star, will present a program featuring songs, skits, speeches and memorabilia depicting various aspects of the black experience.
The program will be 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Baptist Church, 2075 Russell Mt. Gilead Road in the Russell Community.
Elk's Heritage Celebration Feb. 24
R.B. Matthew Temple No. 739 Daughters of Elk will present a Heritage Celebration in honor of Black History Month. The program will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Elk Home.
Silverleaf to celebrate Black History Month
Ward Calhoun will present "Black History The Story of the Black Confederate Soldiers" on Monday at Silverleaf in celebration of Black History Month.

Calvary Christian School hosting fund-raiser
Calvary Christian School will host its annual Auction and Spaghetti Supper on Monday in the school auditorium.
The auction includes items donated by local businesses. Children at the school are also competing to win a free month's tuition. The child who has the most people attend the fund raiser will receive the prize.
The supper is $4 for adults and $2 for children.

Aldersgate sponsoring annual dinner
The resident council at Aldersgate Retirement Community is sponsoring an annual Chicken Spaghetti Dinner from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday. The menu will include, chicken spaghetti, Italian green beans, green salad, bread and banana pudding. Plates are $6 and take-out is available.

Postal workshop to be held
The U.S. Postal Service has reopened registration for candidates to take the rural carrier associates exam.
The Meridian area QWL-EI group is presenting a free workshop for the public. Sessions will be 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Main Post Office in Meridian, 2100 Ninth St.
Test-taking tips, sample test questions and the duties and responsibilities of a rural carrier associate will be given out.
Pickering to host Military Academy Day
U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering will host a Military Academy Day from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. March 2 at Hinds Community College, Rankin Campus. The campus is at 3805 Highway 80 East in Pearl.
Military Academy Day is designed for interested students and parents to learn more about our nation's military academies. The event is free and open to the public.
Pickering and members of his staff will be joined by representatives from each of the five service academies: U.S. Military Academy (West Point), Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and Coast Guard Academy.

McRae's invites local schools and school organizations to participate in the store's annual "School Benefit Sale." This year's event will take place 6 a.m.-10 a.m. March 2. Newton Hospital sponsors talent showcase
Newton Regional Hospital will sponsor a talent showcase at 2 p.m. March 9 to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life 2002. The show will be in Huff Auditorium at East Central Community College in Decatur.
The entry fee is $25. Entry forms may be picked up at the hospital or obtained by calling Michael Miller at 683-0325 or 635-2509.
