Quitman tops Columbia, 9-7
Quitman made five first-inning runs stand up in a Laurel Tournament win over Columbia Monday night.
The Panthers improved to 2-1, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-3.
For Quitman, Jonathan Russell and Blake Pippin had two singles apiece.
Anthony McKenzie (1-0) recorded the pitching win. McKenzie tossed four innings with Russell pitching the final three frames to pick up the save.
Brandon Haddox took the loss.
Quitman built an 8-1 lead in the fourth inning. The Panthers then held as Columbia tried to rally with two runs in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning and a single score in the seventh inning.
In Monday's late tournament game, West Jones also defeated Columbia 10-3.
Quitman's game scheduled for tonight has been cancelled due to the Panthers hosting Terry in the Class 4A South State basketball tournament at 7 p.m.
The baseball Panthers return to action Thursday when they host Neshoba Central at 7 p.m. Quitman begins Division 5-4A play Friday at Northeast Jones.

EMCC sweeps Coahoma
Margaret McClure and Dorecious Powe both had 18 points and Erica Ray netted 15 as the East Mississippi Community College Lady Lions (6-15, 4-7) defeated Coahoma 70-59 on Monday night in Clarksdale.
In the men's game, EMCC (6-14, 4-7) squeaked by with a one-point 67-66 win. Ryan Rodriguez had 15 points for the Lions and Reshard Alonza had 13.
Both EMCC teams will host Northwest Mississippi on Thursday night at home. The women's game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Summer league registration has begun
Clarkdale summer league Dixie Youth baseball registration will be held Feb. 23 and March 2 at the Clarkdale summer league field from 8 a.m. until noon or just stop by Wrangler Furniture.
Please bring a copy of the birth certificate. Registration fee is $55 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.

Sikes hits hole-in-one
Shot Sikes shot a hole-in-one at Northwood Country Club on Saturday. He used a 9-iron on the 135-yard seventh.
It was witnessed by Manny Mitchell, Ken Densmore, Tim Hogan, and Wayne Goodman.

Kick-Off Classic set for Saturday
The First Annual Mississippi USSSA Kick-Off Classic Invitation Softball Tournament will be held on Feb. 23 at Tatum Park Softball Complex in Hattiesburg. It is the USSSA sanctioned Regional qualifier with USSSA Core 47 Worth balls only.
The men's A/B will be six homers &out and men's C/D will be two homers &out.

Go-Kart season is fast approaching
Causeyville Raceway will kick off the 2002 Go-Kart racing season Saturday, Feb. 23 with the running of the fourth-annual Ice Bowl.
Karts and drivers from the Meridian and surrounding area will be competing for cash prizes. All classes will be paying $300 to win so the racing action should be exciting.
Gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday with racing getting under way at 12:30 p.m. Concessions will be available.
General admission is $5. Children 7-12 $3; 6 &under free. No alcoholic beverages allowed.

Youth baseball registration coming up
The North Meridian Optimist Baseball Association will be holding registration for youth baseball ages 9-14 starting Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Phil Hardin Park.
Registration will continue Monday, Feb. 25 through Friday, March 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The last day for registration is Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All registration will be held at Phil Hardin Park.
If you are unable to register at the above times, registration forms can be picked up at the Meridian Parks and Recreation Office or at Judge Little Sporting Goods.

ECCC splits pair at Pearl River
The East Central Community College Warriors took another big step toward clinching an MACJC state tournament berth with a 106-101 overtime win over Pearl River Community College Monday at Poplarville.
No individual scoring was available. ECCC improved to 10-11 overall and 5-6 in the South Division. Pearl River fell to 3-8 in the division.
The Warriors can clinch a postseason berth with a win over Hinds Community College Thursday night at Decatur.
In the women's game, Pearl River posted a 77-62 win.
The Lady Warriors, already assured of a berth in the state tournament, got 18 points from Nikki LaCour, 10 from Lori Cumberland, and eight each from Trelisa Eichelberger and Ashley Brown.
The ECCC women fell to 12-9 overall and 6-5 in division play. Pearl River improved to 8-3 in league play.
The Lady Wildcats got 25 points from Audosha Kelly and 17 from Jancsi Newsome.
